There’s a phrase I say so often it’s become something of a mantra in my work: felt safety is not a luxury. It is a prerequisite.

And yet, walk into almost any professional development session focused on early childhood education and the agenda is packed with literacy benchmarks, math readiness targets, kindergarten readiness checklists. All of it important. None of it possible — truly possible — without addressing the first and most foundational pillar of whole-child development: Safety.

When I say safety, I’m not talking only about the physical environment — padded corners, proper ratios, clean floors. I’m talking about felt safety. The child’s internal answer to the question the nervous system never stops asking: Am I okay here? Do I matter here? Can I afford to be curious here?

Neuroscience tells us that when a child’s brain perceives threat — even social threat, even the subtle threat of not belonging — the brain’s survival circuitry takes over. The amygdala activates. The prefrontal cortex, the seat of executive function, reasoning, and learning, goes offline. You cannot teach a dysregulated child. You can manage them. You can contain them. But you cannot teach them. Not in any lasting way.

Dr. Bruce Perry’s research on neurosequential development confirms what many educators already feel in their bones: a child must move through safety before they can access any higher-order skill. Fred Rogers understood this decades before the neuroscience caught up. His entire body of work was built on one core belief — that every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and safe. That was his curriculum. And it worked.

So what does felt safety look like in your classroom or program? It looks like your greeting ritual at the door every single morning. It looks like your tone when a child makes a mistake. It looks like your room arrangement — whether it has a cozy corner, a calm-down space, something that says you are welcome to be all of yourself here. It looks like your predictable schedule. Your consistent language. Your willingness to repair when you’ve been short with a child.

Felt safety is built in moments. And it is the job of every educator in the life of a child birth through eight to build those moments, intentionally, every day.

Before the phonics. Before the number sense. Before the writing workshop. Safety first.

Because children don’t learn from people they don’t trust. And they don’t trust environments that don’t feel safe.

There is a moment I have witnessed in early childhood classrooms that I never grow tired of — and one that I have come to recognize as the most important indicator of whether real learning is happening.

It is not the moment a child reads their first word, or counts to ten, or writes their name. It is the moment a child walks through the door in the morning and the room reorganizes itself around who they are.

The teacher greets them by name — their real name, said correctly, warmly. A book on the shelf features a family that looks like theirs. The morning song is sung in the language spoken at home. And the child, without consciously reasoning through any of this, receives a message that travels straight into their nervous system:

I belong here.

That message is not decoration. It is not a nicety we layer on top of curriculum after the “real” work is done. It is, in fact, the precondition for all learning that follows.

Belonging — the third pillar of The Hundred Percent Child™ Framework — is what makes intellectual risk possible. And intellectual risk is what learning actually requires.

When children feel that who they are is welcomed — their culture, their family structure, their language, their way of knowing — they are freed from spending cognitive energy managing the threat of not fitting in. Neuroscience tells us that the brain under threat of social exclusion activates the same neural pathways as physical pain. A child who does not feel they belong is a child who is, neurologically speaking, in pain — and a brain in pain cannot prioritize new learning.

This is not metaphor. This is biology.

So what does Belonging look like in practice?

It looks like mirrors and windows — books that reflect children back to themselves and open windows into the lives of others. It looks like family engagement that truly invites rather than merely notifies. It looks like a classroom where every language spoken at home is honored as an asset, not treated as a barrier. It looks like a teacher who learns the correct pronunciation of Xiomara, and of Adetola, and of Nguyễn — and says each name like it matters. Because it does.

Every child comes to us already whole. Already culturally rich. Already bearing knowledge shaped by generations of lived experience. Our job is not to fill an empty vessel. Our job is to recognize the fullness already there.

When children know they belong, they take risks. They ask questions. They hypothesize and wonder and try again. They become, in the truest sense, learners.

And isn’t that everything we said we were here to do?

Share The Hundred Percent Child

There is a moment every experienced early childhood educator knows — the moment when a child is trying so hard to listen, to sit still, to cooperate, and you can see in their face that their body simply won’t let them. Not because they don’t want to. Because they can’t.

Not yet.

This is not a discipline problem. This is a regulation problem. And the difference between those two interpretations will determine everything about how we respond — and what that child believes about themselves for years to come.

Regulation — the ability to manage emotional and physiological states — is not a character trait. It is a developmental skill. And it is not one children can build alone. The science is clear: co-regulation comes first. Children develop the capacity to self-regulate only because the attuned adults in their lives have regulated with them, consistently and lovingly, over time.

Think of it like scaffolding. You don’t build a second story before the first floor is stable. We cannot ask children to access academic learning — to read, to reason, to problem-solve — when their nervous systems are in survival mode. The brain simply does not work that way. When stress hormones flood the body, the prefrontal cortex — the part responsible for focus, memory, and decision-making — goes offline. Every teacher knows this. But not every school system acts like it.

That is what The Hundred Percent Child framework insists upon: Regulation is the second pillar for a reason. It follows Safety. It must. Because until a child feels safe, they cannot begin to regulate. And until they can regulate, they cannot learn.

So what does co-regulation actually look like in a real classroom? It looks like a teacher who takes a slow breath alongside a dysregulated four-year-old. It looks like a calm corner stocked not with punishment timers but with sensory tools. It looks like morning meetings where we name feelings before we name letters. It looks like educators who have done enough of their own emotional work to stay regulated when a child cannot.

This is the work. It is not soft. It is not secondary. It is the foundation upon which everything else is built.

If we want children who can think, learn, and one day lead — we must first help them feel.

I want to tell you about a child whose full name is SỌPỤLỤCHUKWU — known as SỌPỤLỤCHI.

His full name first. Say it with me:

SỌPỤLỤCHUKWU —Soh – poo – LOO – choo – kwoo So → like so pu → like poo lu → like loo (this syllable is emphasized) chu → like choo kwu → like kwoo And his everyday name, SỌPỤLỤCHI: Soh – poo – LOO – chee chi → like chee

In Igbo, each vowel is spoken clearly and fully. Nothing is swallowed. Nothing is rushed.

His name is from eastern Nigeria, carried by the Igbo people. SỌPỤLỤCHUKWU is not merely a label — it is a declaration. CHUKWU is the Igbo word for God — the Great God, the Source. The full name means: Follow God. Walk with God. Remain with God. It was given with intention. It was given with prayer. It was given to say: This child’s life is guided by something greater.

Now imagine that child — this boy, carrying this name, this inheritance — walking into a classroom where no one ever tried to say it right.

There is a quote often attributed to Dale Carnegie that has stayed with me:

“A person’s name is, to that person, the sweetest and most important sound in any language.”

I would go further. A child’s name is not just a sound. It is an identity. It is a history. It is, in many cases, a spiritual inheritance — a word their parents spoke over them before they were born.

When we mispronounce a child’s name — or worse, quietly replace it with something easier — we are not simply making a linguistic error. We are sending a neurological signal: You are not fully welcome here. The version of you that fits in this room is a smaller version. Leave part of yourself at the door.

The brain hears that. The body feels it. And learning — real learning, the kind that requires curiosity and risk-taking — becomes much harder to reach.

SỌPỤLỤCHUKWU’s parents gave him a name that means Walk with God. What he needed from his classroom was something parallel: a teacher who would walk with him — into his language, into his name, into the full dignity of who he is.

That is what Belonging means in The Hundred Percent Child™ framework.

Belonging is the third pillar — positioned deliberately after Safety and Regulation, and before Inquiry. You cannot honor a child’s identity if they don’t first feel safe. And a child cannot become a thinker, a questioner, an innovator in a room that has asked them to be invisible.

When Belonging is present — when a child’s name is spoken with care, when their home language is welcomed as an asset, when their story is visible in the books and images around them — the brain’s threat-detection system quiets. The prefrontal cortex, where higher-order thinking lives, becomes available. Curiosity rises.

A child who is seen can finally be curious.

SỌPỤLỤCHUKWU eventually found a teacher who learned his name. Not just SỌPỤLỤCHI — his full name. SỌPỤLỤCHUKWU. She asked him to teach it — syllable by syllable. She practiced until So – pu – lu – choo – kwoo felt as natural as any name she’d ever said. She asked what it meant, and received the answer — Walk with God — with genuine reverence.

She wrote it on his cubby. She said it at morning meeting. She said it when she called on him. She said it the way his family said it.

In that classroom, SỌPỤLỤCHUKWU became, in his teacher’s words, “the most curious child in the room.”

He always was. He was simply waiting for proof that his whole self — his full name, his language, his inheritance — was welcome there.

This is the work, educators. Not just pronouncing names correctly (though please do — practice, ask, try again). But understanding that when we say a child’s name right, we are saying something much bigger:

You belong here. All of you. As you came.

That is the condition under which children learn. That is the foundation The Hundred Percent Child™ is built on.

This is regulation. And before we can teach a single letter, number, or concept, we have to meet children there.

I’ve spent over twenty years in early childhood classrooms and programs, and I keep coming back to the same truth: co-regulation is not a strategy. It is a prerequisite. The brain cannot absorb new learning when it is in a survival state. The research on this is not new — Bruce Perry, Stuart Shanker, Dan Siegel — they’ve all said versions of the same thing. Regulate first. Everything else follows.

But here’s where I think we get stuck as educators: we were trained to deliver content. Our lesson plans have learning objectives. Our assessments measure outcomes. Nobody on our professional development calendar gave us an hour on what it actually looks and feels like to be a regulated presence for a child who hasn’t experienced one at home.

Co-regulation isn’t about having the right script. It’s about being the calm when a child has none. It’s the slow breath you take before you respond. The warm voice that stays steady when theirs breaks. The body language that says you are safe here before your words ever do.

This is the Regulation pillar of The Hundred Percent Child™ Framework — and it sits between Safety and Belonging for a reason. Once a child feels physically and emotionally safe, the work of regulation begins. And that work lives in the adult, not the child. We cannot ask children to regulate themselves before we have co-regulated with them. That’s not developmentally appropriate. That’s not even neurologically possible.

What I want you to walk away with today is this: the child who seems unreachable is not the problem. They are the signal. And you — your regulated nervous system, your steady presence, your unwavering warmth — you are the intervention.

That’s not extra work. That’s the work.

I have been a classroom teacher. A curriculum director. A program director. An executive director. I have sat at every table in this field — the classroom table, the leadership table, the policy table, the funding table.

And at every single one, the same question followed me in.

“What does this child need — and are we giving it?”

Not what does this program require. Not what does this assessment measure. Not what does this standard demand.

What does this child — this specific, particular, irreplaceable child — need right now? And are the adults in that room equipped to give it?

The answer, I have learned, is always some version of four things.

Safety

The child whose nervous system knows it is not in danger can begin to learn. Not because we told them to feel safe. Because the environment, the language, the relationships, and the routines around them have communicated — consistently, predictably, over time — that they are not at risk here.

Safety is not a feeling. It is a neurological state. And it is built by educators, one interaction at a time.

Regulation

The child whose emotions have been named and honored can begin to think. Co-regulation — the act of one regulated nervous system helping another nervous system settle — is the most powerful teaching tool available in any early childhood classroom.

It is also the most undervalued. We train educators on curriculum. We rarely train them on what to do when a child’s brain has moved into survival mode and learning has become neurologically impossible.

Belonging

The child who knows they are fully seen can begin to risk. Belonging is not a poster on the wall. It is not a morning meeting prompt. It is the daily, sustained, specific message that this child — with their particular story, their particular family, their particular way of being in the world — belongs here.

You matter here. Your story matters here. You are not a problem to be managed. You are a person to be known.

Inquiry

The child whose questions are welcomed can begin to create. Inquiry is the natural orientation of every child who feels safe, regulated, and belonging. Curiosity does not need to be manufactured. It needs to be protected.

When the first three conditions are in place, the fourth arrives on its own.

This is the framework.
